Smart Certification
Overview
The Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine (BHI) at Massachusetts General Hospital invites licensed healthcare practitioners to train and earn certification in its Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) program. The certification program provides rigorous training in the BHI SMART model and gives clinicians the basis for offering and studying the efficacy of the SMART program in clinical populations. To obtain certification, participants must be a licensed healthcare practitioner.
Certification Training Requirements
There are five areas of training to complete:
1. Continuing Medical Education (CME):
Attend the BHI/Harvard CME course within past three years
OR
View all three online BHI/MGH Psychiatry Academy CME courses in Mind Body Medicine within the past three years:
- Stress and the Relaxation Response: The Fundamentals of Mind Body Medicine
- Using Mind Body Techniques in Clinical Practice
- Building Resiliency through Cognitive Reappraisal and Lifestyle Modification
2. SMART Program
Experience an 8-session SMART program as a participant. Certification candidates may participate in a BHI patient group or take SMART through the Harvard Medical School Continuing Education program, where BHI leaders will provide the program to clinician learners all over the world through a live, virtual group experience (16.0 CMEs/CEUs provided). Candidates must participate in seven of the eight sessions to be eligible for certification. For upcoming course dates or to register as a participant, please contact Samreen Sethi at sssethi@mgb.org.
3. SMART Implementation Training
Participate in a 2-day SMART Implementation Training (in-person or via video conference).* The training will be taught by BHI clinicians.
4. Mentorship
A BHI clinician will mentor candidates during delivery of the participant’s first SMART program as a group leader; there are nine 1-hour sessions in total.**
5. Competency Exam
Demonstrate core knowledge on a competency exam.**
The Pathway to Certification
To begin the process, you must complete a BHI SMART Practitioner Certification Program application. If your application is approved, a member of the BHI staff will contact you to discuss a timeline for training.
Using and Maintaining Certification
Certified practitioners will be able to deliver the BHI SMART program to their patients, order SMART manuals and recordings for patients directly from BHI, and will be recognized by BHI as achieving certification to deliver the SMART program clinically.
Recertification
Certification is valid for 3 years from the initial completion date of all requirements. Eligibility requirements for recertification include demonstration of active, ongoing delivery of the SMART curriculum, as well as taking part in BHI recertification activities TBD.
*To participate in an Implementation Training, the minimum prerequisite is attendance at the live CME or completion of the BHI CME Psych Academy online course, Stress and the RR: The Fundamentals of Mind Body Medicine
**Candidates must have completed requirements 1-3 to complete 4, and must complete 4 to be eligible for 5.
